Meet our Director of Engineering, Natalie Wood

What do you do at Beacon?

I lead a group of cross-functional engineering squads that make up half of Beacon’s Product Engineering team. It’s mostly a mix of engineers, data scientists and engineering managers. My role is mostly strategy and people-focussed. Making sure everyone has what they need to do their best work (and then get out of their way) is my highest priority.

One of the areas I look after is machine learning and artificial intelligence. There are some really interesting problems, such as predicting the most accurate ETAs for shipments so our customers can make better decisions around supply chain management. I’m very excited about the work that’s been done there and what’s to come this year!

How did you come to work in engineering?

My path into engineering was less than traditional. I started out working with speech recognition software following my degree in Linguistics & Phonetics. That then morphed into a software testing and quality engineering role. Over time, this led to managing and a leading team. Quality engineering is still very close to my heart.

Why Beacon?

There are a couple of big reasons. Firstly, I was attracted to what Beacon is trying to do. The opportunity is clear and on hearing more about it through the interview process, there was an infectious shared excitement and passion for the direction we’re heading in. I wanted to be part of that. Secondly, I know it sounds cheesy, but it was about the people. I’m most energised when working with smart, passionate people and, without exception, everyone I’ve met and worked with has exceeded expectations.

I love that we are all encouraged to challenge ourselves and others constantly to do better, and I’ve personally found the way challenges have been received to be refreshing. I’m a huge advocate for raising awareness around neurodiversity, and the openness to keep becoming more inclusive here has been inspiring and rewarding.
